So close, and yet potentially so far?

Over the weekend, James Shield of The Star wrote an article in which he detailed all the arguments why Blades boss Chris Wilder deserves to be crowned as the Manager of the Year for his accomplishments this season.

He made some pretty good arguments, pointing out that it really is a straight race between him and Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp to take the honour given the size of their relative achievements this year. I have said before that I felt that the award should go to Klopp if he completed the ‘double’ of going through the season unbeaten and amassing 100 points at the same time, purely because of the historic achievement that it is.

However, with the unbeaten season part now out of the equation, it makes it a much more competitive field, and if Wilder can get the Blades into a European spot in his first season in the division, and given the comparative size of their respective resources, I feel like it would be hard to take it away from him.

Will Wilder win Manager of the Year?

Yes

Yes

No

That really is another reason why Sheffield United fans should be wanting to get the season underway, because right now the job isn’t yet finished, and it would feel somewhat tainted to not only have our league position, but also Wilder’s potential honour handed to us based off a ‘Points Per Game’ scenario.

At least this way we’ll be able to say that Wilder earned is award, which he would thoroughly deserve by the way.

What about you? Do you think that the season needs to be completed in order for Wilder to make a ‘rightful’ claim at being manager of the year? Or do you think he’s got it wrapped up regardless?
