Opinion: Proposed change that could affect the Blades would just be a moral catastrophe

|

This will just open up a big question that I don’t think any of us really want to get into.

In a rather interesting development, it would seem as though if the league season does carry on, then there might be one or two changes that will be taking place, and I’m not just talking about when the season is going to finish or indeed where the games will take place.

According to a report in The Mirror, the league has discussed the idea of clubs using five substitutes as opposed to the usual three, presumably so players can stay fresh as they try to cram in as many fixtures as they can together. On top of that though, the report claims that VAR is going to be scrapped for the remainder of the season as the fears of having a three-man team operating out of Stockley Park might not work in conjunction with social distancing.

Now given that Sheffield United have come off worse when it comes to VAR this season, having had more decisions go against them than anyone else in the division, you might think that bringing that rule in would be a positive. Imagine how much closer we’d be to securing a European place if we didn’t have those calls go against us.

Are you a fan of VAR?

No

However, I think that stopping VAR now would be the wrong call, because it brings into question the reputation of the entire league if you only have it for certain parts of the season, and then cancel it at arguably the most important part with ten games to go.

Imagine if it got to the final day of the season, whenever that may be, and we concede a goal from a dodgy handball in the build up that ultimately costs us three points and a chance at Europe? Whilst we may have been harshly treated by VAR in some people’s eyes, there’s still the chance that it could come to our rescue at a later point in the campaign.

So delay the season if you must Premier League, but don’t make any changes that aren’t necessary.

Moral catastrophe? More immoral, you think, than breaking social distancing rules just in case whoever you’re playing handballs it? Poor Sheffield United. If this is deemed a necessary change then I’m not sure how much notice should be paid to people complaining about morality within what in the end is only a game of football.

For God’s sake. Nurses are dying saving peoples lives and you are procrastinating over bloody football!!
    Who bloody really cares?
A sense of perspective is needed. Shankly was so wrong. It isn’t more important than life or death. It’s a
bloody game mate, and I am a fan, but please wake up and smell the reality. Am sure other clubs will be hurt far more than you from all this. It’s pathetic to listen to…
