Opinion: Academy prospect could move up the chain quickly after being spotted with first-team

|

A big future planned for him?

I wouldn’t hold my breath, but you know the saying, ‘no smoke without fire’.

I’ve spoken before about the need for the club to institute something of a ‘changing of the guards’ at Bramall Lane, as we look to move into the next era of Sheffield United football, and part of that means bringing in some of the younger players, something we’ve done quite well with over the years.

And it’s interesting to see one player in particular, lurking in the background during recent first-team training sessions, and that’s Rhys Norrington-Davies, spotted here alongside Chris Basham and one other player (judging by his hairstyle, I’m guessing Callum Robinson).

Having spent the past two seasons on loan, first with Barrow in the National League and Rochdale in League One, he’s moving up the leagues and has even become a regular for the Wales U21 team. Now the question is what will become of him this season?

Should the club be utilising more of our young players next season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Another loan, possibly to a Championship side, would be highly likely at this stage of his career, but the fact that he’s found himself amongst the first-team players this summer does make me think it’s possible we see him play not necessarily a major part in the team going forward, but maybe getting the odd appearance here and there, similar to what Jack Robinson was like in the latter half of last season following his move from Nottingham Forest.

Perhaps even in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup, given how tightly those fixtures are packed together at the start of the campaign, if we get through the first few rounds there, we might need him to take some strain from the senior players.

And if he impresses, who knows what’s on the horizon for him?

What about you? Do you think that Norrington-Davies will see some action with the first-team this season?
