A look at a United fixture on this day

? in 1999 the Blades hosted Oxford United in the Nationwide League Division 1.

United, who were on the cusp of the play-offs with boss Steve Bruce in charge went into the game on the back of two excellent victories against Tranmere Rovers and Port Vale.

The game was moved to a Friday for the visit of Oxford whose attack was spearheaded by the monumental Kevin Francis. United were looking to complete a league double, when Dean Saunders and Petr Katchouro had been on target in the reverse fixture.

It wasn’t meant to be on this night however, as the Blades never looked convincing against the relegation battlers. Marcelo was on the scoresheet just before the half hour mark to put the Blades in front before Andy Thompson equalised just minutes later.

With the game heading for a draw, and with a crowd of just 14,115 Nicky Banger struck home in injury time to put a dent in United’s play-off hopes.

The Blades lineup that night: S. Tracey, R. Kozluk, W. Quinn, C. Woodhouse (O. Tebily, 44), L. Sandford (T. Dellas, 73), S. Derry, A. Campbell (P. Kachouro, 85), R. Ford, Marcelo, P. Devlin, J. Hunt
