A look at a United fixture on this day

? in 1999 the Blades hosted Oxford United in the Nationwide League Division 1.

United, who were on the cusp of the play-offs with boss Steve Bruce in charge went into the game on the back of two excellent victories against Tranmere Rovers and Port Vale.

The game was moved to a Friday for the visit of Oxford whose attack was spearheaded by the monumental Kevin Francis. United were looking to complete a league double, when Dean Saunders and Petr Katchouro had been on target in the reverse fixture.

It wasn’t meant to be on this night however, as the Blades never looked convincing against the relegation battlers. Marcelo was on the scoresheet just before the half hour mark to put the Blades in front before Andy Thompson equalised just minutes later.

With the game heading for a draw, and with a crowd of just 14,115 Nicky Banger struck home in injury time to put a dent in United’s play-off hopes.

The Blades lineup that night: S. Tracey, R. Kozluk, W. Quinn, C. Woodhouse (O. Tebily, 44), L. Sandford (T. Dellas, 73), S. Derry, A. Campbell (P. Kachouro, 85), R. Ford, Marcelo, P. Devlin, J. Hunt

  • i remember Marcelo scoring at coventry in the cup and taking his shirt off and throwing it to the blades fans. he was wearing two shirts so he still had one on but i remember that the club said they were going to charge him for the one he threw to the crowd. did i dream that or just gong loopy?

  • No, it happened – followed by every kid in Sheffield asking their Mam and Dad for a new shirt so they could do it at school.

  • rubbish team that one on reflection…i thought woodhouse was one of the most overrated players ever but we got a mill and ndlovufor him! great work by NW! as for jonathon hunt well the less said the better..although i remember one league cup game think the next season he got dogs abuse all game from thsi one fan – then without about ten minutes left after another round of abuse he jsut turned and told the fan to “eff off” – everyone was laughing as this fan sat down all red faced! dont remember anything else he did!!
