Mark Howard is the Sheff Utd no.1 but he’s of no use to us if we take any risks with him an he ends up suffering serious injury damage is he! As such former Everton ‘keeper Iain Turner will deputise, it seems, once gain on Saturday against Crewe.

Nigel Clough has told the Sheffield Telegraph that he’s fully aware that he can’t take any risks with Howards back as they’re ‘very fragile’ so unless he’s at 100% fitness he’ll not be risked.

It might have been a recurrence of his back problem but this was more ‘muscle related’ so we didn’t take a chance with him against Scunthorpe on Tuesday in the four-nil win and aren’t going to on Saturday either, although it is thought that he could be fit.

‘Backs are very fragile but Mark’s isn’t too bad, thankfully. It’s just muscle related.

‘We’re thinking he might be back for Saturday, if not it’ll be Barnsley the following Saturday. But in any case, we won’t risk him if he’s still sore.’

With the priority simply to ensure that we make the top six, as Clough again reiterated, there’s no need to take any undue risks, you do that in the play-offs to a degree when you get to them and not before!

In the longer-term the plan is for Howard to ‘get some rest for his back in the summer, and get it sorted.’
