Sheffield United midfielder Nick Montgomery has apologised to the fans for the shocking performance of the team in the 3-0 defeat to Swansea City on Saturday.

The Blades conceded three goals in 14 second half minutes to crash out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

Montgomery told the official site ‘Yes we had a lot of players missing, but the side we put out should still have been capable of beating Swansea.’

‘We wanted to go as far as possible in the competition and that performance wasn’t acceptable.’

The midfielder went on to apologise to the fans for the display, adding ‘I just want to apologise to the fans for letting the club down, the manager down, ourselves down and the supporters down.’

Montgomery, who was made captain for the day, was arguably United’s best player in a match that saw little of positive note for the Blades.

All we need now is the apologies of the other 10 players who started!
