Mixed Bag For Clough

Manager Nigel Clough has said he was happy with our second half performance in the game against Notts County but he was disappointed to have again conceded from a set piece.

United had to battle back from a goal behind to take a point at the weekend and speaking to the Official Site Clough explained.

‘In the second half we were spirited, played with urgency and created enough chances and opportunities to win the game. But it is worrying that it takes us falling behind to another poor goal in the first half of a game, to make us start playing on the front foot. We lacked that bit of composure and quality with the final pass in the second half and we were turning down chances to cross the ball as the game progressed and that drives us mad.’

Clough goes on to say the frustration comes from training because the focus is on getting the ball and getting runners to the near post but for whatever reason we aren’t taking what we work on in training into matches but he’s confident that ‘it will come’ with more hard work.

With their goal coming from a rare Mark Howard error, the gaffer also confirmed that at half time the stopper held his hands up and apologised to the team, but as is our luck from set pieces it was punished with a goal.

However, County are on a decent run of their own and have their strengths and Clough wasn’t going to downplay how difficult a game they made it, but he felt we deserved the point in the end as the least we should’ve got from it.

With tomorrow evening’s re-arranged league game against MK Dons at Bramall Lane, the gaffer also revealed that he hoped on loan Chris O’Grady would recover sufficiently from the calf problem that stopped him from debuting against Notts County, but Craig Alcock and James Wallace both remain doubts.
