Leeds United are reportedly eyeing up a late swoop for Sheffield United and Ireland international defender John Egan, according to the Express.

John Egan, 29, has been a reliable centre-back for the Blades since joining the club back in the summer of 2018. The defender played every single league game for Sheffield United in the last campaign, helping them keep 20 clean sheets which saw them finish 5th spot in the Championship.

Leeds United currently have several defensive injuries including the club captain Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo. John Egan would provide the Whites with an experienced, reliable and durable centre-back.

The experienced defender is currently on a contract that runs out in 2024, so if the Yorkshire club want Egan then they will have to cough up a large fee. There are less than 48 hours to go in the summer transfer window, so Leeds United are leaving it late if they are to make a formal bid for the current Sheffield United captain.

If the worst does happen and Leeds United come in with a big fee at the last minute for Egan then this would throw a spanner in the works for the Blades. Although they do have Anel Ahmedhodzic who could take the middle centre-back role, with club legend Chris Basham moving back into the right wide centre-back position.
