Sheffield United’s league 1 inconsistency, which we sometimes show, continued on Boxing Day as we slipped to defeat at Port Vale.

A second half equaliser drew us level but a late Port Vale penalty gave them a two-one win at Vale Park, with us playing a large period of the game with only 10-men following a Basham sending off.

There wasn’t much in it early on but with virtually the first chance of the game Marshall’s corner to the edge of the box was met by N’Guessan, his shot was flicked home by Williamson (16) to give Port Vale the lead.

Had it mot been for a fine reaction save from Port Vale ‘keeper Neal we would have soon been level but that save from a Scougall deflected shot kept the hosts ahead with our task getting even harder when Basham was shown a straight red before the break for a late challenge of former Blades man Brown.

Even with 10-men we managed to draw level early in the second half when Murphy was able to beat a couple of players before crossing into Campbell-Ryce (55) who made no mistake.

Port Vale had the chance to restore their lead when Harris brought down Marshall in the box with N’Guessan (79) beating Howard into the top corner from the penalty spot to seal Port Vale’s two-one win.
