Iliman Ndiaye could see action later today when Senegal takes on the Netherlands in their opening group fixture at the 2022 Qatar world cup.

The 22-year-old has certainly earned his spot in Aliou Cisse’s world cup squad, Ndiaye has scored nine goals for the Blades which makes him the joint-top scorer in the Championship. His two assists mean that Ndiaye has been involved in 31% of Sheffield United’s goals in the league campaign so far.

Even though he has been a clear standout player for United, contract extension talks have yet to surface with Ndiaye’s contract set to expire in the summer of 2024. The Star recently wrote that it “would be a surprise” if at least one top-flight, either at home or abroad, did not inquire about his situation when the transfer market reopens in January.

What could pique interest of those top-flight clubs even more is if Iliman Ndiaye demonstrates his ability and potential during the world cup. He may have increased involvement due to the injury which has ruled out his country’s star player Sadio Mane.

Paul Heckingbottom and Iliman Ndiaye’s connection together could be deemed important when it comes to negotiating a new contract. Heckingbottom has coached Ndiaye for a few years now after previously working with Ndiaye during their time with Sheffield United’s development team.
