Blades leading scorer Steven Kabba has spoken out for the first time about the decision not to sign an extended deal at Bramall Lane. The striker has bagged 9 goals already this season and is only contracted to United until the end of the season. He and the Blades board failed to reach an agreement about a new contract and that could see him attract attention from premiership clubs when the January transfer window opens. He told the Sheffield Star that he feels it won’t be expensive for the club to tie him down to the club for the long-term though.

‘I’m not one for conducting these conversations in public but I guess it’s inevitable that whenever agreement can’t be reached people start to jump to their own conclusions. It is true that after talks with the manager, myself and my agent we were unable to reach an agreement on any proposed contract extension. However, reports that I have demanded figures in excess of £10,000 a week are just not true.’

He continued: ‘Due to unfortunate injuries in my early Sheffield United career I am still on the terms of my original deal so it’s easy for people to draw the conclusion that I’m being greedy and trying to double or treble my wages. But I can assure the club’s supporters I’m not asking to break the clubs current pay structure nor am I asking to become the club’s highest-paid player. I have reassured the club that I would not let any discussions effect my performance and would like to think I’ve gone some way to proving so with subsequent performances. After all, the manager first mentioned a possible new contract when we were in China so this has not happened overnight.’

‘If anything, the situation will only help me focus on delivering my best. If I can play a part in a promotion campaign it would be the highlight of my career so far. Like most ambitious players, the only time I’m unhappy is when I’m not playing. I want to play every minute of every game. I’m confident no one can question my desire, hunger, commitment or application.’
