Sheffield United look set to snap up Aberdeen defender Charlie Mulgrew as Kevin Blackwell attempts to rebuild his defence.

Mulgrew, 24, is available on a free transfer, following his contract at Pittodrie expiring, would become Kevin Blackwell’s fourth signing of the Summer.

Speaking on Mulgrew, Blackwell said, ‘He is a player we are interested in but it is at a delicate stage.

‘He has been on our radar for a while, although his agent is talking to other clubs.’

United never really recovered from losing Matt Kilgallon and Kyle Walker early in 2010, and with Gary Naysmith joining Huddersfield Town this summer, the Blades boss is short of options in defence.

New Reading signing Marcus Williams has already rejected the Blades, instead opting to sign for the Royals.

Whilst the deal is far from done, it’s encouraging that United are looking to bolster their squad.

  • A left back, 6ft 3ins, free kick specialist, U21 international, out of contract and the right age, sounds like he fits the requirement.
PS: Sheps, that has to be the worst headline yet. LOL.

  • They should have let me loose on the Sun this morning..”Green’s Day: American Idiot!”

  • Absolutely agree – all the right credentials and no fee – leaves us cash to spend on Surman and Simmonsen. Have to say after a slow start on restructuring KB is coming up with some class acts. Gone up in my estimation and am excited about further signins and next season!

  • Latest rumours – Simo deal is done, to be announced next week, Carl Dickinson joining on season long loan from Stoke, BT to Middlseboro!

  • A left back, 6ft 3ins, free kick specialist, U21 international, out of contract and the right age. sounds to good to be true Florida

  • There are rumours about Mifsud – less happy – he really has only the Malta link to recommend him – we need football not business decisions!

  • Apparently recoverig now, was on life support for three days after iproblem with a routine op… No date on possible return which is fair enough!!

  • Mifsud is a proven goal scorer at this level. Ok his spell with the dingles didnt go to well, but what would be the harm if he was free?

  • McCabe made the comment about “talking to Blackwell about Mifsud” to the Maltese media last week after the FL conference in Malta. Might just be bravado for the sponsors benefit though.

  • Glad Lee is on the road to recovery, puts things into perspective doesnt it. Latest rumour from the oracle – Big Sam is on his bike, Speedo MBE to move up.

  • that would be a welcome rumour. he is less likely to be tempted with a full manager role if he is an assistant. and i never liked big sam

  • mulgrew is apparently a good player whe he wants to be according to my Falkirk following friend…glou and harrogate remember peter hetherstone?? about 1988 season when we went down or season before – we formed a firm friendship me and this lad on the basis that he ahd played for both clubs! sure he signed at same time as agana….anyway point beign he has a cracking free kick and could be quite good but appears lazy sometimes by all accounts

  • Would weep few tears if big Sam went – would hope a period as assistant would groom Speed for the real thing , though not sure what he would learn from Blackwell (sorry just couldn’t stop myself despite fact KB has gone up in my estimation a bit in the last few days)

  • Peter Hetherstone, Yes I remember him – vaguely. Played late 80’s as you say Gleadless, but only a handfull of appearances at a bad time for the club. Little fella, a winger came to us from Watford – as most players did in those days – but spent most of his playing career in Jockland I think. Didnt he manage Falkirk?

  • Someone close to my family has just told us that simmo isnt sighning tlks have broken down and now we are after either ikeme or ian turner the 3rd choice everton keeper if u remember he played for piggys a while bk. Can any1 confirm are we having a new strip this yr or not.

  • Whats happening to Henderson? How many strikers do we have now? If we get mifsud is he going to play at centre half where we need players?
