Sheffield United look set to snap up Aberdeen defender Charlie Mulgrew as Kevin Blackwell attempts to rebuild his defence.

Mulgrew, 24, is available on a free transfer, following his contract at Pittodrie expiring, would become Kevin Blackwell’s fourth signing of the Summer.

Speaking on Mulgrew, Blackwell said, ‘He is a player we are interested in but it is at a delicate stage.

‘He has been on our radar for a while, although his agent is talking to other clubs.’

United never really recovered from losing Matt Kilgallon and Kyle Walker early in 2010, and with Gary Naysmith joining Huddersfield Town this summer, the Blades boss is short of options in defence.

New Reading signing Marcus Williams has already rejected the Blades, instead opting to sign for the Royals.

Whilst the deal is far from done, it’s encouraging that United are looking to bolster their squad.
