Sheffield United have this evening confirmed that arrival of Charlton Athletic winger Ricky Holmes.

We’ve been linked with the 30 year old for quite a while now but it did seem likely that a deal would be done given the varying comments made by Charlton in particular in recent weeks, and an undisclosed fee has now been agreed, the player has undergone a medical and accepted terms on a two and a half year contract.

Holmes becomes our third signing of the January window following quickly on from Ryan Leonard, Lee Evans and on loan James Wilson.

Speaking to the Official Site as is capture was announced, manager Chris Wilder explained.

‘I worked with Ricky previously and it is no secret that I’m an admirer of his ability. He has something a little different and I’m confident that his best years are ahead of him. He completes the jigsaw of our incoming transfers and I must thank Paul Mitchell (head of recruitment) and Carl Shieber (head of football admin) for securing these deals early in the transfer window.’

As per the speculation last week, the other James Wilson has now left Bramall Lane.

The defender had been on loan with Walsall in the first half of the year, but we have agreed a mutual termination of his deal to enable him to join another club. He departs with ten appearances to his name following a free transfer from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2016.
