I’m hearing a lot of positive words, but so far there hasn’t really been much to back it up.

For now anyway, and let’s hope that all changes going forward.

There’s been some talk this week about when or if Sheffield United might get a player into the England squad, something that hasn’t happened since the early 1990’s when Brian Deane was called up.

I suppose you can count Dean Henderson if you want seeing as the work that got him an England call up was all done at Bramall Lane, but we’re approaching a pretty grey area right there seeing as he was technically a Manchester United player, I’ll let you work that out amongst yourselves.

And in Chris Wilder’s mind, Blades do have someone who could make an impact for the Three Lions in the near future, and that’s Aaron Ramsdale. The stopper was called into the England U21 side for their recent games against Kosovo and Austria, but according to Wilder, and a certain Mr Southgate as well, a call-up to the senior team might not be too far away either:

“To sign an outstanding young English goalkeeper, I listened to an interview with Gareth Southgate. He talked about Nick Pope, Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and then he talked about Aaron Ramsdale and he said how important it was for Aaron to be included in that group. He’s highly thought of.”

Who will get a senior England cap first?

If he wants to make an impression on Southgate, he’s going to need to do it fast, because with young goalkeepers in the squad like the aforementioned Henderson, who some are already talking about as a potential number one for England, if Henderson is going to have his progress stunted playing backup at Old Trafford, then this season is the time to pounce and make that move his own.

Let’s just hope it comes to fruition.

What about you? Do you think there’s a chance Ramsdale could become a regular for England in the next few years?
