Hecky’s opinion on safe standing

Safe standing has been talked about for many years, finally we have a breakthrough. Last season, a select bunch of teams in the UK tried out safe standing. Cardiff, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham took part in a safe standing pilot in the second half of last season.
After a successful trial, safe standing has been given the green light to all clubs across the Premier League and Championship. Football stadiums can now apply to operate safe standing zones in their grounds.
Brentford, QPR and Wolves will now join Cardiff, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham in offering safe standing areas for home and away fans from the start of the 2022-23 season.
But what about Sheffield United? Well, manager Paul Heckingbottom shared his opinion on it yesterday:
“If I was asked I would encourage people to look at it and see if it can be brought about safely. We need to remember why all-seater stadiums were brought in. It can never be at the expense of safety. I think it adds to the atmosphere and certain people’s enjoyment.” [Via BBC Radio Sheffield]
The Blades boss also mentioned that the question should be put out to the United fans, do you want safe standing to be introduced?
Presumably safe standing would be added to the back of the kop, it already generates a good atmosphere. Plus, they’re at the back so the standing zone wouldn’t be impeding the view of the fans that are sitting. Additionally, it can increase the capacity at Bramall Lane, by how much, I’m not sure.
