Sheffield United leapfrogged Tranmere Rovers in the League One table in a crucial win at Prenton Park.

Over 2,000 United fans made the trip to the Wirral and they were rewarded for their efforts when Tranmere defender Ash Taylor put through his own goal just before half time.

In a game that was never a spectacle, United had the best chances. Jonathan Forte forced Owain Fon Williams into a good save and Ryan Flynn came very close to doubling the lead late in the game when his shot came back off the crossbar.

Tranmere rarely threatened George Long in the United defence as they produced another clean sheet, their seventh in their last eight games.

The win for United moves them back up to fourth place and they are back in action on Monday, when they welcome Carlisle United to Bramall Lane.
