First team coach Andy Garner has reflected on the two nil victory over Barnsley on Saturday.

Speaking to the Official Site our coach stepped up to media duties for a change in place of manager Nigel Clough, and explained that he was delighted to see Steven Davies grab his first for the club and then for on loan Jason Holt to ensure the three points with his third goal in as many games.

‘It was a magnificent performance and a thoroughly deserved victory against a Barnsley side who have been in terrific form since Lee Johnson’s arrival. We were comfortable throughout the the game and that is some achievement in a local derby, especially away from home, but we wanted to show our intent and get in their faces from the off. The last thing we told the players was to be positive, take the game to them and get that all important first goal.’

Following on from the defeat to Crewe, Garner also talked of the importance of getting back to winning ways especially given what else was riding on the game.

‘We had created a couple of good opportunities prior to scoring but it was a fabulous header from Steven Davies. Steven has made a real positive impact since he joined us, but it is good he has got his first goal, because as a striker it can play on your mind when you haven’t scored for your new club. Jason Holt has scored three in three now and all of them have been good strikes, this one flew in from the edge of the box. He gets in some excellent positions and more often than not he hits the target, his reward has been three goals in quick succession, hopefully there is more to come too.’

Garner ends by saying that it was important to open up the gap on Barnsley again because of what it does to the table, but the main joy came from the manner of the performance and the victory as it was a dominant display and after some disappointments it should set us up nicely for the season run in.

As we know now, victory over Doncaster in the next Easter fixture certainly helps that.
