With Sheffield United confirming the speculation yesterday surrounding a new deal for centre-half Jack O’Connell, it was certainly a boost for plenty of fans as we look ahead to Monday’s derby with Sheffield Wednesday.
The 24-year-old former Brentford man notched up 100 consecutive showings before he found himself sidelined with a hamstring injury, and although he last featured for manager Chris Wilder back at the beginning of February, he does have over 130 appearances to his name in our shirt and is a key part of the first team squad.
In signing a new deal seeing him through until the summer of 2023, he becomes the latest to pen an extension at Bramall Lane as we continue gunning for promotion this year, and he follows David McGoldrick, Enda Stevens and Billy Sharp in committing their futures.
Taking to social media to react to the news of his new deal, fans were rightly delighted that the speculation was proven to be true.
If we fail to get promoted this season this probably won’t prevent the inevitable, similarly to Brooks but it should jack up the transfer fee . It’s great to see the club seeking early resolutions to transfer negotiations and the players wanting to re-sign ⚔️

Great news. Only problem is, he has to get his place back.

Did the same with Brooks last year. We've obviously had interest him and this will up his value like Brooks sale. Future proofing.

Or just rewarding a player with a new contract? Don’t be so cynical. Brooks was an unnecessary player here that’s why we sold him
