Manager Chris Wilder has hailed the performance of striker Ched Evans in last night’s League Cup clash against Walsall.

Hosting the Saddlers at Bramall Lane for the first round game, Sheffield United had to come back from a goal down, but eventually we took a three two victory to book our place in tonight’s second round draw and Wilder was obviously delighted with the win.

Speaking to the Star as he met with the media following the game, Wilder spoke about the impact of Evans in the match and also admitted we had submitted a big for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Conor Coady.

‘What I saw from Ched is exactly what I expected. It`s exactly what I expect from every player in his position to be fair. I told Caolan afterwards, ‘he`ll force his way past you (in the pecking order) on that.` It`s a team game but, at times, it does become an individual sport.’

Wilder went on to say.

‘I`m not saying he`s going to go straight into the side at Middlesbrough this weekend. But, I tell you what, if that carries on then Billy and Leon are going to have to play well themselves if they want to stay in. He`s nowhere near at his best yet because he missed a lot of football in pre-season. But that`s what it`s all about; making the most of your chances and taking your opportunities. I want tough decisions and, if that continues, he`ll give me one. We`re delighted for him.’

Moving on to the subject of transfers, Wilder also confirmed that ahead of the game we had submitted an offer for Conor Coady and were waiting to hear back from Wolves.

Coady was with us back in 2013/14 on a loan spell from Liverpool where he took in 42 starting appearances with eight further showings from the bench, with a return of six goals.

‘Yes, we have put a bid in. What it is will remain between the two clubs. Yes, it`s ambitious. But we like to think we are an ambitious club.’

  • Good performance for a returning Ched. Coady would be a good addition to our squad, having seen him play previously at BDTBL. I thought we might have signed him sooner after his loan spell though.
