You know the phrase ‘cheap and cheerful’?

I wonder if you can be expensive and cheerful at the same time, especially when it comes to buying players.

The Sheffield Star released a list of players in the Premier League that are going to be free agents this summer, and if I’m being brutally honest, there weren’t a lot there that really seemed like exciting targets for us to be pursuing.

They were either players like Adam Lallana who might seem talented, but have a track record of injuries that would really make me think twice and perhaps three times about bringing them in. Or they were players who were very much past their sell-by date in this division with like Leighton Baines or Phil Bardsley.

There was only really one name that looked somewhat promising, and that was Spurs’ young central defender Japhet Tanganga, who has received serious praise from Jose Mourinho in the past for his performances, and could possibly come in as cover for our back three as we move forward next season.

Should the Blades be looking at Premier League free agents this summer to improve the squad

Yes

No

No

But seeing a list of players like that got me thinking, should Sheffield United be looking at free agents this summer? Or should we try to be a little more ambitious? I’ve put this to fans somewhat in the past, when it comes to the summer window, with the majority of them saying we need to build for the future, but do we necessarily have to be cheap about it?

That’s what I want to put to you today.

Do you think that we should maintain some level of frugalness when it comes to the summer window by looking at free transfers? Or can we still maintain ‘build for the future’ approach whilst being more ambitious and spending some money at the same time?

Let me know what you think.
