A narrow one nil victory was largely deserved and secured through a first half penalty from Jose Baxter and speaking to the Official Site Clough explained.

‘It wasn’t a brilliant game and we weren’t sparking but the clean sheet was crucial and it was probably our biggest three points of the season in the circumstances. We started the game as we had hoped and for half an hour we were very good and could have easily been more than one goal in front, although Port Vale had their moments.’

Clough admitted that we really should’ve capitalised more on the first half showing, because at half time with the introduction of Tom Pope they went a lot more direct and caused us problems, but that just led him to praising defensive duo Basham and Brayford for how they dealt with him.

‘At half-time, Tom Pope came on and they went more direct, but Basham and Brayford dealt with him brilliantly. We were a bit nervy, the crowd were too, there was a lot at stake and we knew the importance of keeping a clean sheet and thankfully we did.’

Returning to winning ways, especially with how results elsewhere fell could have been key to making the play off spot ours this season but we simply have to build on it, and in terms of building on this three points Clough knows we will have to show improvement.

‘We still made the wrong decisions at crucial times offensively as we looked for that game clinching second goal, non more so than when Kieron Freeman tried to put the ball on a plate for someone to tap in when he should have shot hard and low into the corner in the second-half. But that will come with confidence and the three points are all that mattered on the day.’
