John Brayford, who wouldn’t have been signed by Sheff Utd on a permanent basis from Cardiff in January with the thoughts of him playing in central defence – which he did again alongside Chris Basham on Tuesday, feels that our win against Scunthorpe has ‘put a marker down.’

Brayford told the Sheffield Telegraph that he’s well aware our play-off rivals, and those outside of the top six looking to come in, would have seen our game against Scunthorpe as one we might have slipped up in but feels we’ve now given ourselves the edge by not only avoiding defeat but running out convincing four-nil winners.

‘Scunthorpe was our game in hand and I think teams around us would have been looking at our results, hoping that we would slip up.

‘But I think we have put a marker down with that win. We aren’t the ones going to be slipping up here and we’ll leave that to somebody else.’

We have been there or thereabouts all season, we had a bit of a wobble a few weeks back but seem to have put that behind us and this win very much leaves ‘our destiny in our own hands’ doesn’t it.

It’s getting to the stage, almost, when we know our play-off place is almost assured – we still need a couple more wins and he’s looking for us to build on the Scunthorpe win with another against another relegation threatened side Crewe when they come to Bramall Lane on Saturday.

‘We’ve got another big game this weekend and we’ve got to look to build on that. But we can take a lot of confidence from the way we performed against Scunthorpe.

‘We’re ticking games off now and if we win one, then another one, that will cement our place in the play-offs. Then, we will see where we are come May.’

Brayford was quick to stress that he knows we can’t ‘rest on our laurels’ and can’t take anything for granted as nothing is assured, with others waiting to pounce, but he also know that when they play-offs do come about, assuming of course we’re in them, there aren’t likely to be ‘many teams will be snatching your hand off to come here in the play-offs!’
