Should England’s World Cup bid be successful for 2018, then summer football will be coming to Sheffield, albeit across the city with Sheffield Wednesday.

Whilst Bramall Lane is certainly ahead currently in terms of upgrades, Hillsborough’s 9,000 capacity headstart, in addition to their future plans has clearly given them the edge in the fight for a host stadium.

United’s extension on the Kop will still go ahead as planned, but the GAC (Laver) stand is likely to be kept as it is.

It will come as a blow to Kevin McCabe’s international endeavors, as he won’t be able to claim that we’re hosting World Cup football, but it’s a move that will still benefit the city.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford has had this to say:

‘Nevertheless whether you’re a Blade or an Owl, the fact that Sheffield has been chosen is great for the city and we should all now be proud of Sheffield’s achievement and get behind the bid. If England is successful in bringing the World Cup to the nation, Sheffield stands to gain so much and be recognised, yet again, as a city of sport.’

The final decision will be made in December 2010.
