Sheffield United are lining up multiple midfield targets in case they sell Sander Berge on deadline day. But one of those targets is said to be signing elsewhere.

It was confirmed by Alan Nixon, over the weekend, that Sheffield United were interested in signing Lewis O’Brien on loan from Nottingham Forest. They would’ve had to agree on a £10M obligation-to-buy, only if United achieved promotion.

The midfielder was a standout performer for Huddersfield Town last season during their superb season, just ultimately falling short in the play-offs having been beaten by the team that later signed him in a package deal, including Harry Toffolo, for £10M.

Football Insider are now reporting that the energetic left-footed midfielder is close to joining Blackburn Rovers on loan for the remainder of the season.

West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United were the other names interested. However, the Baggies were said to have been put off by the inclusion of the £10M obligation-to-buy clause, which initially handed the Blades an advantage in the race for him.

O’Brien was seen as a potential replacement for Berge. But with news this afternoon that Sander Berge has returned to training, as normal, are the Blades still interested in selling the Norwegian midfielder?

I’m happy to hear sander is back training at shirecliff as normal 😀 I hope he’s with us at the end of this season when we get promoted back to the premiere league. Let’s hope the princess pays his bills and doesn’t blemish uniteds reputation with other teams not trusting us to pay what we owe he’s obviously got serious money issues the sooner he sells the club to solid owners who have money to spend with the teams best interests at heart the better. C”MON YOU BLADES 👏💪
