Former Blades favourite Dave Bassett has said that United must be in contention for promotion this season with the squad at the manager’s disposal or their’s ‘something wrong’.

Bassett enjoyed 7 years at Bramall Lane, which included promotions and a magnificent survival in the old division one, despite not winning any of the first 16 games. But Bassett has stated that United must gain promotion to the Premier League this season, as they are better than some of the teams already above them.

‘If they aren’t in the play-offs something’s wrong.

‘Kevin Blackwell has inherited a good squad, the likes of James Beattie, Billy Sharp, Matt Kilgallon and Gary Naysmith are all very useful players. I had tipped them for automatic promotion.

‘Reading are all right but not as good as they were three years ago when they ran away with it. Birmingham are strong like Sheffield United and Wolves. I liked the look of Burnley but they don’t get the crowds and backing of a Sheffield United or a Birmingham.

‘I thought Ipswich would do better but didn’t agree with the bookies that QPR were favourites. They’ve got money but who have they bought who’s cost anything?

‘And it’s one of those where the chairman thinks he’s Jose Mourinho, thinks he should pick the team. Iain Dowie was always going to get the sack if he couldn’t keep them in the top two.’
