Sheffield United’s six year absence from the Championship was ended last week when Northampton were beaten – victory at Port Vale took United to the brink of winning the title on Saturday, which was confirmed when Bolton lost at Oldham this afternoon.

Coming from behind to beat Northampton secured United’s return to the Championship, a potential re-union with rivals Sheffield Wednesday could be on – if they fail to secure a return to the Premier League via the play-offs?

United’s 3-0 win at Vale Park meant the Blades had almost, but not quite, won the title but the party was only put on hold for 24 hours. Second-placed Bolton HAD to win at Boundary Park to retain a chance of catching us but a 1-0 defeat at Oldham means the champagne will flow. Well, after the Easter Monday game.

Ok, perhaps a little swig was taken this afternoon…

Three wins from the final three games and United will also mange 100 points making Chris Wilder’s special first season in charge at Bramall Lane a truly remarkable one. Wilder has secured back-to-back titles, at Northampton in League 2 last time round and now United this term – the Championship to complete a hat trick anyone?
