Stephen Quinn capped a man of the match performance with a 91st minute strike to seal a 2-0 victory for the Blades today.

Quinn, switching back to the left in recent weeks has regained his form after some lacklustre performances in the Autumn, followed up an impressive display on Tuesday by proving to be the star atop the Christmas tree in today`s Coca Cola Championship encounter ahead of the busy Christmas period.

With five minutes added on in the second half, a clearance by Speroni was expertly headed down by James Harper to Richard Cresswell who found Quinn in the area on the left hand side, where he fired low past the ‘keeper to seal the victory.

It was a deserved goal, which was thanks mainly to James Harper`s vision in midfield. Harper, began the game in midfield alongside the returning Lee Williamson owing to

Nick Montgomery`s injury. After the game, people described it as the best Blades performance of the season, and those claims were certainly justified, Neil Warnock`s post match comments claiming that Palace were “lucky” to only concede two goals proved this.

Williamson, on his return, stamped his authority on the game in the first half when he opened the scoring. After Evans and Ward had previously been unable to make the most of their chances, the Blades number nine played in Quinn on the left and his low cross was placed home by Williamson despite Speroni getting a solid hand on it, and Davis clearing from under the bar.

Evans began to justify his price tag as the Blades played some encouraging football, with three efforts in a short space of time that were blocked, saved and deflected over respectively.

Quinn turned provider again from the left for Williamson, but this time his shot was deflected over the bar. Darren Ambrose was withdrawn at half-time due to a virus he`s been struggling with, and the Blades managed to regain the impetuous in the second half. United were denied a penalty when Ward`s cross was deflected behind by an arm, but the referee waved away the protests.

Kyle Walker`s run down the right resulted in a shot from just inside the area, but it cleared Speroni`s goal by some margin, and James Harper saw a shot blocked before Quinn struck in the first of five added minutes, and give the Blades a well earned victory and a third straight clean sheet.

Bunn, Morgan, Kilgallon, Evans (Stewart 80), Williamson, Harper, Taylor, Cresswell, Ward (Camara 87), Quinn, Walker.

nused: France, Reid, Bennett, Little, Kallio.

  • Really enjoyed the whole match yesterday for a change! Quinn was good but the whole performance from the midfield was strong aswell which was perhaps more pleasing. I still think Walker should play on the right with Geary at RB. Attacking wise an extra injection of pace on the flank would be a good addition although after his last couple of performances it would be a tad unfair on Quinn. A push for promotion appears more and more likely when we play like that.

  • You said it all TBW! I have been really pleased with the 2nd half performance on tuesday, and then yesterdays performance just followed on from that. Chants of ‘Blackwell give us a wave’…………Who could have imagined that a few weeks ago! Credit to KB, he has turned things around.

  • Quality Saturday, really thought Williamson made the difference to be honest. His runs from midfield and eagerness to support the front 2 really cheered me up. Some great football in the first half, passing and creating chances. Fair play to Blackwell but just keep the team consistent. Came away from the lane in a good mood for the first time in weeks.

  • What a refreshing change it was on Sat. We seemed to player with real confidence and freedom. I can’t remember the last time we attacked and had as many options available as sat. Everyone seemed to want to push forward. I know its early days but the more I see of Williamson the more I like him. He’s so composed on the ball and know when to make a run and when to stay back. Came away from the game with a big smile on my face and it’s been months since I’ve done that!
