Sheffield United booked their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup with a comprehensive victory over championship club Charlton Athletic.

Second half strikes by Ryan Flynn and John Brayford made sure that League One would be represented in the showpiece semi-finals at Wembley next month.

A frantic first half saw both sides trying to claim control of the game but neither goalkeeper were troubled.

United finished the half strongly. Conor Coady thought he had opened the scoring when he fired home but a correct offside decision ruled out his strike. A teasing ball in the middle by Ryan Flynn had Charlton goalkeeper Ben Hamer at full stretch and Bob Harris saw a strike just clear the bar after a marauding run by Harry Maguire.

Callum Harriott had a fantastic chance to open the scoring for the visitors early in the second half but he couldn`t keep his effort on target with the goal at his mercy and they were made to pay Flynn opened the scoring on 65 minutes when he stretched out a leg to steer home a teasing cross from Jose Baxter.

United doubled their lead less than two minutes later when Brayford fired home from the edge of the area, his shot taking a huge deflection to leave Hamer stranded.

The blades were turning the screw and Coady had his second effort of the afternoon disallowed when he slotted home after Mike Doyle saw his effort come back off a post.

There was no way back for Charlton who were left shell shocked by the performance of Sheffield United and they will live to rue the missed chance by Harriott with the score at 0-0.
