Kevin McCabe has hit out at newspaper reports, by releasing an uncharacteristic statement regarding the club’s transfer policy.

McCabe is outraged at Today’s (Thursday) publication that made outlandish comments about budgets, and the United chairman felt the need to hit back at these reports.

The Club Statement released on the website reads:

‘Figures in the report were inaccurate and way off the mark. There is a clear need to set the record straight once and for all in respect of the current and ongoing investment in the squad.

I have never set any budget for the wage bill going into next season and cannot believe under any circumstances it could be as low as £6m as was reported by one newspaper today. To put it bluntly, dream on!

Ironically, only this morning Kevin Blackwell and I have debated our proactive approach to bring in new players come January to ensure our promotion push is real.

A substantial budget with realistic expectations has been made available to Kevin for players to strengthen the squad over the next eight months.

This summer we paid the Championship’s top fee of £3m for Ched Evans who, outside of the relegated clubs, must be one of the highest paid players in the League.

Our wage bill for players is estimated as being the fourth highest in the division. Put that with the £4.5m investment in new players where we have paid for transfers (including Richard Cresswell who will be signed in the January transfer window), loan fees as well agents’ fees of £350,000 and it is clear that we are determined to provide Kevin with a platform to reach the Premier League.

The reality is that the squad when free of the current terrible run of injuries to key players is of strong quality and has the potential to get us promoted back to the top flight where all Blades want to be.’

Some of you may have noticed my Goebbels reference on a previous article, and considering Sheffield United are usually quite closed when it comes to releasing things, this has certainly come out of the blue.
