Sheffield United striker Leon Clarke has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for April.

When he is on form and infused with belief, there are very few EFL strikers who can match the much-travelled frontman.

Finally free of injuries, Clarke`s six goals in six games came in all varieties – headers, volleys and sweeping finishes.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said: “Leon has been great of late, on a number of occasions he has been the best player on the pitch.

“His goals have been fantastic, but his strength, link up the play and general all-round game have been invaluable to our finish to the campaign. He has deserved his acclaim from the Blades fans.”

Clarke said: “The manager has been the driving force behind our success, not just in April but throughout the season.

“It has been a nice end to the season for me personally, it is fantastic to be able to contribute and be part of it with the lads.”

Sky Sports` EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Clarke`s goals were crucial to the Blades` incredible month with his equaliser against Northampton possibly the most important of the lot.

“It spurred a revival in the game that led to a 2-1 win, meaning that the promotion was secured at the earliest available opportunity and they didn`t take their foot off the gas from that point onwards.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “When Leon`s fit and on form there are few better strikers in the league.

“He has shown this month that he`s capable of scoring all types of goal and I think there will be a few League One defenders glad to see the back of him.”
