Sheffield United today signed their second player, with former Crystal Palace defensive midfielder Johannes Ertl joining on a free transfer.

The former Sturm Graz and Austria Wien player, has eight caps for Austria, and will provide versatility player for United.

Manager Kevin Blackwell said:
‘He’s a good lad who can do a very solid job at right-back, central midfield and even centre-half.

‘He has played enough times in the Championship for me to know he can come in and do it for us here.’

The signing is unlikely to get bums on seats, but will provide United with a depth that was missing in the last campaign. Having a player like this will stop the need for so many loan signings, so before it’s condemned so soon, it’s only fair to give the player a chance.

  • I have to say a very astute signing by KB – he covers a lot of bases and if you read reactions from Palace fans he will be a committed, honest player very much in the Blades mould. Excellent but now onwards – we need flair as well!

  • He’s one of those players who are ugly to hear about, ugly to look at and ugly to watch, but you need one in your squad. Ryan France failed to offer it us, so Ertl will have to do it.

  • Why don’t we go in 4 speroni at debt rigged palace? Surely we should take massive advantage of there torrid situation?bet they word let him go 4 750k and he’s miles better than the thick tractor!

  • Always been impressed with him when I have seen him, could be a really good signing, but then I thought that about Fortune! On the subject of Ryan France, I hear that his name has been circulated by the club as available for transfer.

  • BFL, I agree that Speroni would be a good signing, but still prefer to get Simmo back, Star says first round of talks have been held so lets hope we can get him in.

  • Ertl wont be the only ugly when he joins, Cresswell, Bogdanivich, Williamson and Yeates hit a few branches on their fall out of the ugly tree, and Morgan is no oil painting.

  • I’d luv speroni to cum to the lane more than anyone he’s the best keeper in the championship and only 26. The club shud bid 1m for him now.

  • Sounds like he’s a bit of jack-of-all-trades which could come in handy, but from what I remember of the Pigs v Palace game he certainly wasn’t blessed with much pace!

  • Now Connolly has gone to weeds, it looks more like Ertl has been bought in for the right back position.

  • Never rated connley anyway so nothing lossed there. Really want to see us go in for speroni. I’ll be annoyed of we get a crap keeper when speroni is there on the cheap, we should be pouncing now.

  • BFL Im the same i would like to see speroni at the lane cos hed be the bargin of the season but i like simmo 2 he looked solid when ive bin to see him and would be a great sighning. My friends that are from stoke and follow stoke home and away are all sad that simmo is leaving.

  • Leon Britton signed, now that is a REALLY good signing. Awaiting your article to comment further, Sheps!
