Blades Estonian stopper Mihkel Aksalu has joined Blue Square Premier side Mansfield Town on loan, to replace the injured Alan Marriott.

Aksalu, signed towards the end of last season to act as cover is yet to make a first team appearance for the Blades, and after the capture of Richard Wright by Gary Speed, has dropped to third choice at the club.

The full-international is renowned for his unique kicking style, as he kicks the ball from his hands with one foot, and the ball off the floor with another.

He’s not the first young Blades ‘keeper to join Mansfield, England Under 19 international had a spell with the stags before his release. Annerson later went on to join Rotherham United, and put in a man of the match performance in last night’s Johnstones Paint Trophy game at Burton Albion.

There’s no suggestion that Aksalu’s time with United is over, but Speed felt his side had sufficient cover for current number one Steve Simonsen.

Former Blade David Holdsworth, manager of the Stags said: ‘I am delighted to sign an experienced goalkeeper like Mihkel. He will now play a big part in our season over the next few months which will prove fundamental to our campaign.’
