If Sheffield United are to remain in that race though form, and a run of it, needs to be found fast as one win in the last five-matches isn’t promotion winning form, let alone play-offs clinching form, is it!

Nigel Adkins admits the performance in defeat at Bury in midweek wasn’t good enough but, and that clichéd phrase, he’s looking for a reaction against Port Vale at Bramall Lane today.

The loss at Gigg Lane saw United fans make it clear what they thought with Adkins accepting the viewpoint and knowing this has to be put right. Despite being off the pace of the play-offs he said in his pre-match press conference on the Official Website he remains positive of achieving that goal.

‘Tuesday night was disappointing and frustrating and the fans voiced their opinions at full-time, rightly so. But we are still in the race with a third of the season remaining and we must be positive. The players understand, the next game is the one we can influence and that comes at the weekend.’

I think it’s fair to say ‘we aren’t where we want to be’, as he had, would be an understatement wouldn’t it?

Nothing is ever a given, or taken for granted, but Adkins was appointed to make the play-offs at least. The fact we’re not where we want to be wasn’t something he said he was ‘going to hide away from’ though.

The boss also said he wasn’t going to ‘write the season off either’ (you would hope not) with the final position after 46-matches, not with 15 to go, is the thing that will ‘count the most.’

Looking ahead to the Port Vale game itself he added.

‘Port Vale will provide us with another challenge, but we have to get on the front foot and play with a real belief. We have to give our supporters something to shout about and if we do I am sure they will back the team throughout the game.’

Actions and not words are what spring to mind!
