With more disappointment that highs as of late, manager Nigel Adkins welcomed the weekend’s victory over Port Vale and he knows it has to be the first of many more to come between now and the end of the campaign if we are to achieve our promotion hopes after recent wobbles.

With Billy Sharp finding his 15th goal of the season at Bramall Lane as we hosted the Valiant’s to give us the return of all three points, Adkins told the Official Site in his post game press interviews, that for him it was more than a deserved victory given the performance of the players on the day.

Moving back into seventh place in the table, and with the win coming on the back of a 352 formation for the game, the gaffer explained.

‘It was a good win. The players were excellent and the supporters were too. We changed our shape, whilst trying to play out from the back more and what a goal from Billy Sharp, it was worthy of winning any game. Chris Basham carried the ball forward, laid it into Che Adams and Dean Hammond in a more advanced role has put in a good cross for Billy, who produced a fantastic strike on the turn.’

With defeat to Bury in the last game, Adkins knew the players needed to show a reaction and the fans needed to see one, and he was delighted that was what played out over the 90 minutes.

‘We needed a response after Bury and we got one, we were positive in changing our shape, the wide players bombed on and we kept two players up top throughout. We passed the ball forward whenever possible and created numerous chances; we worked hard and it is the players that deserve all the credit. They came off exhausted and they should do because we want that effort and commitment in everything we do, both in matches and in training.’

With Rochdale up next at the weekend at Spotland Stadium, Adkins will be hoping to register our first back to back victories of 2016.
