Before the restart got underway, Blades boss Chris Wilder said that the team were in ‘brilliant condition’.
Well, I think Wilder might need to rethink that based on the displays in the first couple of games back, especially after today’s result. Sheffield United’s restart went from OK to bad (and let’s just hope it doesn’t go to ‘worse’ before all is said and done), as we fell to defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The game wasn’t exactly the most thrilling of encounters in the first half, with fans on social media making their points fairly well known, but the turning points of the game came almost immediately after half-time as first John Egan was sent off, then an Enda Stevens mistake allowed Allan Saint-Maximin to tap in at the back post.
Was the defeat solely down to the red card?
Yes
No
Then once Matt Ritchie scored to double the lead, it was pretty much game over from there, even before Joelinton made it three to really kill the game off. It was only the second time we’ve conceded three goals in a game this season, and Blades fans were understandably outraged with the result.
A mere shadow of the team we once were. #sufc #twitterblades

We have just completely capitulated now. How have we allowed that goal to be such a simple tap in?! #SUFC #NEWSHU

Wilder and the players must still be on furlough! #sufc #twitterblades

This is the worst game I have seen us play in 3 years. It's like we're back being managed by Wilder. What has happened to my beloved blades?! #sufc

We look like a (poor) championship side today going through the motions in a meaningless pre-season friendly. #sufc

What about you? What did you make of the game?
We were poor againt villa, today we were awful, never seen so many mistakes never seen a smile from any player in 3 hours of play.
We are safe. But unless we find a proven goal scorer at this level next season will be difficult. MacBernie, not good enough. Berge shown nothing yet. Mousset for some reason not getting a game.
