With salary cuts inevitable, Ched Evans is likely to be one of the high-earners looking for a new club, and the striker was withdrawn in the cruellest of ways yesterday.
After coming on as a second-half substitute, the striker was stretchered off with a suspected broken ankle late in the game.
The former Manchester City man has enjoyed his best goalscoring season, netting nine times, but departing on a stretcher sums up his time at Bramall Lane in the previous 22 months.
Signed for an initial £750,000, with add-ons meaning a potential sum closer to £3,000,000, the Welsh international burst onto the scene in the best way possible, scoring against Watford on his home debut. However, a lack of match fitness hampered him during his time at the club, and he never managed to hit the form many expected when he joined from Manchester City.
With a full pre-season under his belt, it appeared this campaign would be better for the frontman who would be shouldering much more responsibility with the injury to Darius Henderson and permanent departure of Billy Sharp, and after scoring on the opening day of the season, Evans again struggled to find any consistent form, once again marred by injury.
Whilst nothing is definitive, it`s highly likely we will have seen the end of the enigmatic Welshman.
