I would imgaine it is fair to say that Robson has very little grasp of Sheffield United’s history but I wonder if he has any idea how lucky he is to be in charge of our club at this time? The following shows our average gates during seasons in the 2nd tier since 1966.

07/08 25,289
05/06 23,650
04/05 19,488
03/04 21,645
02/03 18,068
01/02 18,034
00/01 17,211
99/00 13,700
98/99 16,258
97/98 17,936
96/97 16,675
95/96 12,904
94/95 14,408
89/90 17,008
87/88 10,207
86/87 9,992
85/86 10,798
84/85 12,055
78/79 16,339
77/78 15,489
76/77 16,779
70/71 25,254
69/70 17,840
68/69 15,480

The current average of 25K is (with the exception of the 1971 promotion winning side) way in excess of anything else. One of the many horrifying things to come from Robson’s stewardship is that we are rapidly throwing away years of hard work that has seen crowds rise to virtually unprecedented levels for huge sections of United’s following.

Last season’s 30k average was remarkable for someone who missed out on the early 70s TC and co inspired crowds – it just didn’t seem possible in the mid 80s when the 22,658 present for the 4th round FA Cup game with Derby left this 12 year old giddy with excitement. Before that, we had huge crowds during the post WW2 football boom, for example 50,586 watched PNE at home on 27 December 1949 in the 2nd division.

It is beyond me how McCabe thinks that Robson is still the best man to continue the upwards momentum of the club these past 4 years and he may have a very nasty shock in terms of season ticket sales next summer if we spend all season in lower mid table. Mind you, I am not a spectacularly successful businessman so I suppose we have to sit tight and somehow trust the powers that be.
